Type Locality Ubangi River at Banzyville, Zaire [Democratic Republic of Congo], about 4°18'N, 21°11'E.
Synonym(s) Porcus ubangensis
Pronunciation BAG russ
Etymology The generic name comes from the Mozarabic bagre, taken from the Greek pagros, meaning a fish (Dentex sp.).
