Type Locality Cuyuni-Mazaruni, Cuyuni River, sand island in middle of river just downstream from Kurutuku, 6°54'N, 60°18'W, Guyana.

Etymology Centromochlus: From the Greek kenteo, meaning sting and mochlos, meaning lever or crowbar; in reference to the long spines.
