Type Locality 100 meters upriver frm Caterpiza (ca. 3°55'S, 77°42'W), Amazonas, Peru.

Etymology Cetopsis: From the Greek cetos, meaning whale, and -opsis, meaning likeness; in reference to the whale-like appearance. Montana - meaning mountains, in reference to piedmont streams that the species lives in.
