Type Locality Ri­o Guaire near Caracas, Venezuela.
Synonym(s) Chaetostomus guairensis

Etymology Greek, chaite = hair + Greek, stoma = mouth. Named after the river Guaire in North Venezuela

Size 81mm or 3.2" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification The genus Chaetostoma is not straightforward to identify, but as a general rule, the species has spines behind the gill-cover (interopercular odontodes), no plates on the abdomen, and aside from C. platyrhynchus also lack plates on the snout edge. Different from Ancistrus by not having fleshy tentacles on the snout.

5 anal fin rays, 8 dorsal rays, 5 cheek spines. Cheek spines hooked. Distal edge of caudal straight.
Sexing During the spawning season, the rostrum of males becomes engorged and swollen. Males posses larger, longer anal fins.

Feeding Fresh vegetables such as cucumber and zucchini should be available at all times. Twice weekly feedings of frozen or live foods should be offered. User data.
Furniture Well rounded river cobbles and sand.
Compatibility Not an aggressive fish but may squable with tankmates over choice hiding spots. Offer plenty of caves.
Suggested Tankmates Other fastwater fishes. In nature found among other Chaetostoma spp., Rhamdia guairensis, Rivulus bondi, Ancistrus brevifilis, Farlowella acus, Hoplias malabaricus, Crenicichla geayi, and the tetra Creagrutus beni.
