Common Name
Type Locality River Mbessy, close to village of Ntchouo, 0°46'N, 14°19'E, Republic of Congo.

Etymology Channallabes: From the Greek, channe, meaning anchovy and allabes, the name of a Nilotic fish (a kind of lamprey); in reference to the shape of the fish. From the Sangha freshwater ecoregion (THIEME et al,2004) where the species was found.

Size 221mm or 8.7" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification This species is blackish-brown on the dorsum, with the brown becoming slowly lighter down the sides to the belly. The lateral line is marked by a white line.The number of dorsal fin-rays 120-125, anal fin-rays 104-124. Pectoral fins are always present, few have ventral fins, the pectoral-fin spine is serrated on both faces.
Sexing The genital papilla, which is to the right of the anus as you look at the fish with its head to the left, is elongated and pointed in males while it is round and relatively larger (and larger than the anus) in females. In ventral view especially, females are much broader in the body than males of equal age and rearing practices. It may be hard to see with the naked eye.
General Remarks All known sampling sites were characterised by shallow, muddy, still water, stream margins and similar habitats.
