Type Locality Perak, Sangai Perak at Kampung Kenderong, 3 km from Gerik, 5°24'52.5"N, 101°09'05.1 E, Malaysia.
Pronunciation HEM ee BAG russ
Etymology From the Greek hemi- meaning half and bagrus, the catfish genus. From the Latin divaricatus, meaning spread apart, in reference to the relatively large distance between the dorsal and adipose fins of this species.

Identification Members of the genus Hemibagrus are bagrid catfishes that can attain standard lengths of up to 800 mm and are found in large rivers throughout the Indian subcontinent,Southeast and East Asia. Members of this genus have depressed heads,rugose head shields not covered by skin,a slender occipital process and moderately long adipose fins.

Hemibagrus divaricatus falls under the H. planiceps species group and can be identified by a short adipose fin base and a deep adipose fin.
