Type Locality Río Masparro at site of Masparro Dam, Estado Barinas, Venezuela, 8°50'40''N, 70°06'00''W.
Etymology Hoplomyzon: From the Greek hoplos, meaning shield and myzon, meaning belly; in reference to the bony plates on the ventral surface.
