Type Locality Río Forlón, Forlón, Rio Panuco drainage, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
Synonym(s) Amiurus australis
Pronunciation ick tal oo russ
Etymology Ictalurus: From the Greek ichthys, meaning fish, and ailouros, meaning cat; literally "fish cat" (=catfish). Australis means southern, reflecting the fact that this species is one of the more southern within the genus.
