Type Locality Sungai Kahang and tributary about 44.4 kilometers from Mersing turnoff to Kluang just before side road to Endau Rompin Taman Negara, kilometer 96 from Mersing to Batu Pahat (2°3.93'N, 103°31.58'E), Johor, Malaysia.

Etymology From the Latin, nanus, meaning dwarf and bagrus, the name of a catfish genus frequently used to form generic names.

Identification The bagrid catfish genus Nanobagrus is found throughout Sundaic Southeast Asia. Members of the genus are diagnosed from other bagrid catfishes by their miniature adult size (maximum size under ca 45 mm SL); reduced supraoccipital process; reduced anterior nuchal-plate element; and posterior cranial fontanel large and prominent.Its members typically inhabit small, forested streams with a moderate current.

Large eyes (diameter of 14.1%-15.1% HL). Pectoral spine with 16 serrations on the posterior edge and 35 vertebrae. Body brown with 3 rows of cream-colored spots located (on both sides) above, along and below the lateral line.
