Type Locality Ninar River, about 6 kilometers west of Maprik, Papua New Guinea, about 3°37'S, 143°00'E.
Synonym(s) Neosilurus gjellerupi coatesi, Tandanus coatesi
Pronunciation Nee oh see loo russ
Etymology The generic name comes from the Latin neo, meaning new and Silurus, a catfish name frequently used to form generic names.
