Type Locality Río Casiquiare, 73 kilometers northeast of San Carlos de Río Negro, 2°21'09"N, 66°34'31"W, Amazonas, Venezuela.
Etymology Greek, pseudes = false + Greek, agkistron = hook or barb. "False Ancistrus", meaning that it is like an Ancistrus, but yet not quite. This specific epithet refers to the hypertrophied odontodes (pecten=quill) of the snout, pectoral spine and evertible cheek plates plus the fact that one adult male was presumably collected while caring(genitor=father) for a large brood of young.

Size 242mm or 9.5" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification Pseudancistrus is the only genus of the Ancistrini (former Ancistrinae) that lacks evertible cheek plates. Because of this characteristic, it has at times been placed in the Hypostominae.
Sexing Males possess greatly elongated evertible cheek odontodes as well as slightly elongated odontodes on the pectoral spines and snout.
