Type Locality Río Cataniapo, Caño Gavilán, afluente del río Catanaipo margin izquierda, 5°32'29"N, 67°23'27'W, Estado Amazonas, Venezuela.
Pronunciation ah-PISS-toe-grah-mah
Etymology The genus name is a combination of the Greek apisto, meaning 'meaning uncertain, inconstant, unstable, faithless', and gramme, meaning 'line', in reference to the variably-developed lateral line of these species.
