Scientific Name Brachyplatystoma juruense  (Boulenger, 1898)

Type Locality Rio Juruá, Brazil.
Synonym(s) Ginesia cunaguaro, Platystoma juruense
Etymology Greek, brachys, eia = short + Greek, platys = flat + Greek, stoma = mouth. Named for the Rio Jurua in Brazil, where this species was found.

Size 600mm or 23.6" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification Similar to Brachyplatystoma tigrinus especially when comparing younger fish. B. juruense has a less contrasting colour pattern and much higher body in profile. The adipose fin is larger and barbels shorter too.

Feeding Feeder fish sparingly and beefheart even more so. A steady diet of frozen cichlid mix or bloodworms can be used for small to medium sized individuals. Larger acclimatized fish will also take defrosted prawns. User data.
Furniture A large fairly shaded area is required for the fish to rest under although it will spend some time in the open especially when hungry. The aquarium should not be brightly lit. Owners report that this catfish also appears to like resting on broad flat stone.
Compatibility A large predator, tankmates should be a least half the size of this fish and able to withstand a strong current.
