Distribution Europe: Mediterranean basin (including Mallorca, Sardinia), Atlantic basin south of English Channel and along western slope of British Isles; Rhine drainage. Hybrid zone with Gasterosteus aculeatus in English Channel, southern North Sea, Baltic Sea and their basins. Introduced to Switzerland (native in Basel). Invasive in upper Danube.
