Type Locality Cocalinho, Corixo da Saudade (Corixinho), 25 kilometers north of Cocalinho on road MT 136, rio Araguaia drainage, rio Tocantins basin, 14°17'20.6"S, 51°09'12.1"W, Mato Grosso, Brazil.

Etymology Greek, hypo = under + Greek, stoma = mouth. From the latin faveolus, after favus, honeycomb. In allusion to the colour pattern formed by the pale blotches with thin dark limits.

Size 206mm or 8.1" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification A distinctive but uncommon import. It is not a member of the Hypostomus cochliodon group as has been claimed.
