Distribution North America: Atlantic, Arctic, Great Lakes, and Mississippi River basins from Nova Scotia and Quebec west to Great Slave Lake in Northwest Territories in Canada, and south to Ohio, Illinois and Nebraska in the USA; south in Atlantic drainages to Santee River in South Carolina, USA.

Feeding Omnivorous. Feed brine shrimp, bloodworms, frozen supermarket shrimp or live minnows. Some will accept spirulina which most of the time noticeably improves their overall coloration. They seldom accept dry foods but it is possible to wean them on to this. User data.
Suggested Tankmates Other decently sized North American native fish such as Bluegills, Pumpkinseed Sunfish, Redbreast Sunfish, Black and White Crappie, Bullhead Catfish, and Channel Catfish are good candidates.
Breeding Would be hard to achieve naturally within the confines of an aquarium. Females lay egg strands on aquatic vegetation or structures and males them fertilize them. No parental care is given for the eggs or fry.
