Type Locality Apparently not Cape Colony, South Africa.
Etymology Hemichromis: Greek, hemis = half + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch

Distribution Africa: Coastal rivers from western Ivory Coast to Cameroon, excepted Lower Volta basin; a forest associated species. Introduced around 1970 in a stream fed by hot springs in Villach (Austria).
