|All Fishes Data Sheet|
|Scientific Name||Betta splendens Regan, 1910|
|Common Names||Siamese Fighting Fish
Siamesischer Kampffisch (Germany)
|Type Locality||Menam River [= Mae Nam Chao Phraya], Thailand.|
|Etymology||Betta: Siamese local name of the fish "ikan bettah".|
|Size||65mm or 2.6" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.|
|Distribution||Asia: Mekong basin.|
|Compatibility||Males are territorial towards anything seen as "similar". The common name of Fighting fish is well deserved, and a dominant male will kill anything it thinks is a competing male.|
|Suggested Tankmates||The long fins on the males can become a tempting target for fin-nippers, so avoid mixing with fish that are known to nip other fish's fins.
Also best to avoid other colourful/long-finned fish that may be seen as competitors.
|Breeding||Male builds a bubble nest under a leaf or piece of floating plastic (margarine tub lid or similar), then entices the female into lay eggs in the nest, and guards the eggs/fry until they are free swimming.
It is best to remove the female after the spawn, as the male may see her as a threat.
|Breeding Reports||There is no breeding report.|
