Etymology Greek, hypo = under + Greek, stoma = mouth.

Size 309mm or 12.2" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification Hypostomus subcarinatus has an elongate and narrow body with small to medium-sized dark spots and weak to moderate keels along lateral plates. Dorsal fin, blue-tan. H. subcarinatus is most similar in appearance to H. affinis, H. interruptus, H. nigrolineatus, H. punctatus and H. scabriceps, all found in eastern Brazilian drainages. From the Rio São Francisco basin, H. velhochico is most like H. subcarinatus.
Sexing No sexual dimorphism observed when the species was redescribed.

Distribution Hypostomus subcarinatus is currently known only from the Lagoa da Pampulha, a silted and polluted eutrophic reservoir in the Rio das Velhas basin, city of Belo Horizonte.

Other Parameters Hypostomus subcarinatus was redescribed from a heavily polluted urban reservoir. Clearly, it can tolerate some rather nasty water.
