Type Locality Río Baria head waters, 3 kilometers downstream from Neblina base camp, Amazonas, Venezuela, 0°55'N, 66°10'W, elevation 120 meters.

Etymology Hyphessobrycon: hyphesson, -on, -on = a little smaller + Greek, bryko = to bite.
