Scientific Name Bagre bagre  (Linnaeus, 1766)
Common Name
Type Locality In America meridionali (Central America, probably erroneous); Brazil.
Pronunciation BAG ray
Etymology Bagre: From the Mozarabic bagre, taken from Greek, pagros, meaning fish (of the genus Dentex). Now used in Spanish vernacular to mean catfish.

Identification Bagre bagre is distinguished by having 29–37 anal fin rays, width of cephalic shield at lateral ethmoid area 11.5–14.5% SL, anal fin base length 21.1–30.2% SL, anterior nuchal plate free, differentiated from the middle and posterior nuchal plates, and dorsal fin band-like filament surpassing posterior insertion of adipose fin.
