Scientific Name Conta conta  (Hamilton, 1822)

Type Locality Sanashygotta, Mahamanda River, northeastern Bengal.

Pronunciation kon tah - corn tah
Etymology Named after the local (Bengali) name of the fish (kuta kanti).

Size 78mm or 3.1" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification Conta can be distinguished from all other erethistids by the presence of a very long and narrow adhesive apparatus on its thorax about six times as it is long. It also has extremely narrow gill openings, a slender body, a serrated anterior margin on the dorsal fin spine, a papillate upper lip, and 9–10 anal fin rays. The eyes are small and located dorsolaterally.There is villiform (brush-like) teeth in both jaws. The pectoral fin spine is serrated anteriorly and posteriorly.

Easily distinguished by its narrow body and long caudal peduncle.

Furniture A sandy bottom with numerous rocks and some driftwood. Strong current and cool water is necessary, as these fishes are very sensitive to both temperature and oxygen levels.
Compatibility A peaceful fish that can be kept in a community tank. Best kept in a well-oxygenated tank, preferably with some current. Ideal tankmates include balitorine loaches such as Homaloptera, fast-swimming cyprinids such as Danio or Barilius, and smaller mastacembelids
