Scientific Name | Loricaria sp. (LDA120) |
Common Names | LDA120, Harlequin Loricaria |
Pronunciation | lorry CAR ee ah |
Etymology | (Latin)Lorica, Loricare = cuirass of corslet of leather (a suit of armour made of leather). |
Species Information | |
Identification | When young, Loricaria spp. can be differentiated from the similar Rineloricaria spp. by their more feathered sucker-mouths. In adults this difference is considerably more evident. Imported into Germany in 2005 however the locality was lost but circumstantially may have been the southeast coast of Brazil. The attractive species has a mixture of dark brown, rust and near-white bands which are reminiscent of the undescribed species of Loricaria from Venezuela's Rio Orituco. White body bands a little behind and immediately in front of the dorsal. Dorsal and body below dark brown/grey. Pectoral fins and body in between rusty orange-brown. Colouration would point to life in a clear water river with matching multicolour stones and gravels. |
