Type Locality South of Bulu Island, 6°01'S, 29°45'E, Kigoma District, Tanganyika Province, Tanzania, Lake Tanganyika.

Etymology polli to honour Max Poll, a Belgian ichthyologist who worked extensively with fish from Lake Tanganyika and the Congo drainage.
