Type Locality Bénoué basin at Lakdo, Cameroon.

Etymology Zaireichthys: From the Zaire river and the Greek ichthys, meaning fish; in reference to the type of the genus and its collection locality. In reference to the collection locality of the species.

Identification The majority of species are small and compact, have a defense mechanism of three ossified spines in the dorsal and pectoral fins,being able to lock them into place which makes the genus different from all other Amphiliidae.

Slender for the genus, upper lip projecting,caudal slightly indented with the lower lobe slightly longer. Base color is light yellow-white, a row of dark spots on the back and a second longitudinal row of oval dark spotson the mid flank, dumb-bell shaped area od dark on the caudal.
