| Etymology | The name Ancistrus is derived from the Greek word agkistron, meaning hook, in reference to the interopercular odontodes that are hooked. |

| Identification | Mature males and sometimes females have soft tentacles (bushy fleshy growths) on the snout - this is unique to the genus Ancistrus. This species resembles Ancistrus sp. `Cucuta` and subadult Ancistrus martini. |
| Sexing | Males develop soft tentacles on the head and while sometimes females also do, it is never to the grand extent of those found on that of the conspecific male. |
| General Remarks | This species is captive-bred by Petra Aqua in the Czech Republic and exported as "Ancistrus bodenhameri" (a name which has been synonymized to Ancistrus martini). However, there is no information available as to the catch location for the original breeding stock of these fish, and breeding-sized (5cm SL) individuals of this species do not closely resemble adult A. martini(9cm SL) . This species resembles Ancistrus sp. `Cucuta` and subadult A. martini. Further complicating matters, there may be several spotted brown Ancistrus from this region, some undescribed, so identifying these fish without source information and without DNA sequence data is not possible. Finally, it remains possible that this "species" is a human-made hybrid. |

| Feeding | Ancistrus should be fed mainly on vegetarian foods. Prepared foods include algae wafers and spirulina based sinking food. Vegetables such as courgette/zucchini, and (English) cucumber are an excellent addition to the diet, along with the odd, small amount of more meaty foods. User data. |
