| Etymology | Cetopsis: From the Greek cetos, meaning whale, and -opsis, meaning likeness; in reference to the whale-like appearance. The species name, fimbriata, from the Latin for fringed, refers to the dark pigmentation along the distal portion of the anal fin that characterizes this species. |
