Type Locality Río Mamón, a tributary of Río Nanay, about 25 kilometers west of Iquitos, Peru, 3°42'S, 73°16'W.

Etymology Trachelyichthys: Greek, trachelos = neck + Greek, ichthys = fish; in reference to the long cranial shield, which gives the appearance that the dorsal fin originates at the neck region.

Size 80mm or 3.1" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification Compared to T. decaradiatus, the positioning of the eyes in T. exilis is almost at the beginning of the head whereas the former has them positioned further backwards (slightly before the middle of the head).

Breeding Mating in a regular auchenipterid way by clasping. Internal fertilization. Eggs are sticky, yet - contrary to for example those of Tatia species - are not laid in clutches but can be found throughout the tank.
