Scientific Name Betta bellica  Sauvage, 1884

Type Locality Neotype locality: North Selangor peat swamp forest, adjacent to Perak Island, 43 kilometers towards Sungai Besae (3°39'12.9''N, 101°18'00.4''E), Selangor, Malaysia. Original locality: Perak I., Malaysia.
Etymology Betta: Siamese local name of the fish "ikan bettah".

Breeding Male builds a bubble nest under a leaf or piece of floating plastic (margarine tub lid or similar), then entices the female into lay eggs in the nest, and guards the eggs/fry until they are free swimming.
It is best to remove the female after the spawn, as the male may see her as a threat.
