Distribution Eurasia: with disjunct range of distribution. Subspecies Rhodeus sinensis amarus found in central and eastern Europe, the Russian republics adjacent to Europe and Turkey. Subspecies Rhodeus sinensis sinensis found in the Jangtze basin. In Appendix III of the Bern Convention (protected fauna).
