Scientific Name Ageneiosus militaris  Valenciennes, 1914
Common Name
Type Locality La Plata River, South America.
Pronunciation ah genie OH sus
Etymology Ageneiosus: From the Greek a, meaning without and genias, meaning beard; in reference to the apparent lack of barbels (the fish has very short maxillary barbels that are almost indistinguishable). Militaris: solider or war-like, presumably referring to long dorsal spine, serrated on both sides.
