Type Locality Rio Itabira at Miguel Burnier, tributary of Rio das Velhas, São Francisco basin, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Etymology Trichomycterus: From the Greek trichos, meaning hair and mykter, meaning nose; in reference to the barbels.
