|Etymology||Ageneiosus, from the Greek a, meaning without and genias, meaning beard in reference to the apparent lack of barbels. In fact, catfish of this genus have very short maxillary barbels that are almost indistinguishable to the human eye.|

|General Remarks||A. vittatus is one of the more commonly used scientific names when species of this genus are found for sale, it is slightly surprising to find that this widespread Amazonian species is very, very rarely imported.|
|Distribution||South America: Middle Orinoco and upper Amazon River basin.
