Type Locality Darien, small stream about 6 kilometers downstream from Acandi, entry of the Rio Acandi, Colombia, Atlantic coast.

Etymology Hyphessobrycon: hyphesson, -on, -on = a little smaller + Greek, bryko = to bite.
