Etymology | Ameiurus: ''curtailed'' refers to the lack of a deep notch in the caudal fin. Juveniles and sub-adults are brown in colour, hence the specific name. |

Identification | Flat Head with a concave snout profile. Short anal fin, rounded in outline, 17 - 20 rays. Large dark blotch at dorsal fin base. Yellow green to olive above, dusky yellow on sides, and whitish blue to white below. |
Sexing | Females are much fuller bodied during breeding season. This occurs during early spring. |
General Remarks | Inhabits rocky riffles, runs and flowing pools of swift streams. Rarely found in backwaters. |
