General Remarks The Golden barb is a man made form that is said to have derived from the half-banded barb (Barbus semifasciolatus. The fish appeared in the aquarium trade in the sixties and is said to have been bred by an aquarist named Thomas Schubert of Camden, New Jersey, US. That is the reason why the fish is often referred to as Barbus (or Puntius) "schuberti".
