Common Name
Type Locality Asian highway No. 2, 1°56'20.00''N, 103°09'40.00''E, at road bridge about 3 kilometers north of Ayer Hitam, Malaysia.
Etymology Betta: Siamese local name of the fish "ikan bettah".

Breeding Male builds a bubble nest under a leaf or piece of floating plastic (margarine tub lid or similar), then entices the female into lay eggs in the nest, and guards the eggs/fry until they are free swimming.
It is best to remove the female after the spawn, as the male may see her as a threat.
