Type Locality	Rio Bermejo, 4-5 kilometers south of Pueblo Salado, about 30 air kilometers south of Bermejo (22°27'S, 64°32'W), Argentinean-Bolivian border, Tarija, Bolivia.

Etymology	Cetopsis: From the Greek cetos, meaning whale, and -opsis, meaning likeness; in reference to the whale-like appearance. The species name, starnesi, is in reference, Dr. Wayne C. Starnes, of the North Carolina State Museum of Natural History, who collected the type-series of this species.
