EtymologyFrom the Greek tetra meaning four and akis meaning point, in reference to the multicuspid teeth, and Amphilius a generical name for this group of catfishes.
IdentificationThis genus differs from all other amphiliiids in having pedicellate jaw teeth with a fan-shaped distal end typically armed with two to six tiny flattened triangular cusps.Triangular adipose fin, slender caudal peduncle , caudal fin deeply forked with the lower lobe slightly larger than upper.
