Type Locality Aguaytia River drainage, Santra Ana River, Cordillera National Park, 8°29'51"S, 75°33'36"W, Ucayali Department, Peru, elevation 250 meters.

Etymology The generic epithet "panaque" is a Venezuelan common name for this fish. Patronym honoring Scott A. Schaefer, ichthyologist, Editor of Copeia, and Curator of Fishes at the American Museum of Natural History, for his many contributions to the field of ichthyology, and for his contributions to our understanding of the Loricarioidea in particular.

Identification The genus Panaque is identified by the teeth, which are spoon-shaped. This means that the teeth are noticeably wider at the tip than at the base. Other loricariidae have teeth that are similar width all the way from one end to the other. A second distinguishing feature is the lack of a buccal papilla, which is a "flap of skin" on the inside of the mouth. See pictures in this PDF on Pterygoplichthys.

A dark brown species with black, smudged markings which continue on all fins except the caudal fin which is clear except for a brown trim along the outer edge. Classic Panaque body shape.

Distribution Widespread in the upper Amazon (Solimões) mainstem and its tributaries in Brazil, Ecuador, and Peru including the Purus, Ucayali/Urubamba, and Pastaza Rivers, and at least as far down the Amazon River mainstem as Santarem, Brazil.

Feeding All Panaque appear to feed on wood, so wood should be present in the tank. They also take prepared algae wafers and fresh vegetables (zucchini, cucumber, peas, green beans) and tubers (potato, yams and similar). User data.

Compatibility Generally peaceful, but may defend their territory against conspecifics.
