Etymology | Geo - earth, -phagus - eater: Eartheater. This species is named for Dr. Kirk O. Winemiller, who led the field expeditions to the Río Casiquiare region during which most of the type specimens of G. winemilleri were collected, and in recognition of his nearly two decades of contributions to ecology and tropical fish biology, many of which have been based on Venezuelan fishes. |
