Type Locality Barrigona, Río Meta, Orinoco system, Colombia.
Pronunciation hi fess oh bry kon - MEH tay.
Etymology Hyphessobrycon: hyphesson, -on, -on = a little smaller + Greek, bryko = to bite. The species name, metae, is named after the Rio Meta, from which it was collected.
