Type Locality	Río Parucito at Raudales Salomon, 2.7 kilometers north-east of San Juan de Manapiare, 05.34637°, -066.03347°, Río Manapiare-Río Ventuari-Río Orinoco drainage, Amazonas, Venezuela.

Etymology	Greek, hypo = under + Greek, stoma = mouth. Rhantos is Greek for sprinkled, speckled, or spotted and refers to the tiny randomly placed spots of this species.
Species Information
Size	196mm or 7.7" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification	Different from all described Hypostomus except H. micromaculatus in that it's covered with small dark spots. Can be separated from H. micromaculatus by the fact that the latter has oval spots in rows, whilst this species has round and evenly distributed spots. For further details, see reference.
Habitat Information
Distribution	South America: Venezuela. Currently known from the Río Ventuari, a tributary of the upper Río Orinoco, and the mainstem upper Orinoco above Puerto Ayacucho to the Río Casiquiare in Amazonas. Husbandry Information
Furniture	Habitats from which H. rhantos were collected range from consolidated lateritic rocks in flow, to bedrock cracks in flow, to branches and trunks of trees in slack water.
