Scientific Name	**Hypostomus subcarinatus** Castelnau, 1855
Common Name
Type Locality	Minas Gerais State, Brazil [possibly the Rio das Velhas].
Pronunciation	hi POSS tow muss
Etymology	Greek, hypo = under + Greek, stoma = mouth.
Species Information
Size	310mm or 12.2" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification	Hypostomus subcarinatus has an elongate and narrow body with small to medium-sized dark spots and weak to moderate keels along lateral plates. Dorsal fin, blue-tan. H. subcarinatus is most similar in appearance to H. affinis, H. interruptus, H. nigrolineatus, H. punctatus and H. scabriceps, all found in eastern Brazilian drainages. From the Rio São Francisco basin, H. velhochico is most like H. subcarinatus.
Sexing	No sexual dimorphism observed when the species was redescribed.

Other Parameters	Hypostomus subcarinatus was redescribed from a heavily polluted urban reservoir. Clearly, it can tolerate some rather nasty water.

Suggested Tankmates	In the wild, this species is found with three non-native cichlid species, Coptodon rendalli, Oreochromis niloticus, Parachromis managuensis.
