Type Locality Río de la Plata, Argentina.
Synonym(s) Pimelodus labrosus
Etymology Named after Hermann von Ihering, 1850-1930; He arrived in Brazil in 1880 and settled in Rio Grande. Expert in birds, fishes and molluscs.
