Type Locality Rio Ipiranga, tributary of Rio Juquiá, Fazenda Brasban, municipality Sete Barras, Rio Ribeira de Iguape drainage, São Paulo State, Brazil, 24°12'19"S, 47°53'51"W.
Etymology Greek, itys, ityos = circle + Greek, glanis = a fish that can eat the bait without touching the hook; a cat fish.
