Type Locality Backwater stream, about 14 kilometers northwest of Palangkaraya, 2°05'06''S, 113°46'23''E, Kalimantan Tengah, southern Borneo, Indonesia.
Pronunciation Nah no BAG russ
Etymology From the Latin, nanus, meaning dwarf and bagrus, the name of a catfish genus frequently used to form generic names.

Identification The bagrid catfish genus Nanobagrus is found throughout Sundaic Southeast Asia. Members of the genus are diagnosed from other bagrid catfishes by their miniature adult size (maximum size under ca 45 mm SL); reduced supraoccipital process; reduced anterior nuchal-plate element; and posterior cranial fontanel large and prominent.Its members typically inhabit small, forested streams with a moderate current.
