Etymology | From the Greek notos, meaning back and oura, meaning tail. In reference to the confluent adipose and caudal fins. This specific epithet refers to the contrasting light (albus=white) regions of the caudal fin with the dark (ater=black) saddles. |

Identification | Yellow-brown to light brown above,faint to prominent dark mottling or blotching. 4 dusky saddles; pale yellow to cream-white below. Two forms exist: a mottled, stout-bodied form in St. Francis River drainage and a boldly patterned, more slender form in upper White River drainage. |
