Scientific Name Paracetopsis atahualpa  Vari, Ferraris & de Pinna, 2005
Common Name
Type Locality Río Tumbes, Cabo Inga (3°58'00''S, 80°24'59''W), Tumbes, Peru.
Etymology A combination of Greek 'Para' - near or beside, Cetopsis - indicating that this genus is similar to Cetopsis, but sufficiently different to warrant its own genus. The species name, atahualpa, is in reference to Atahualpa who reigned from 1515 to 1533 as the last ruler of the Inca Empire that encompassed the region from which the population samples of this species originated.

Size 242mm or 9.5" SL. Find near, nearer or same sized spp.
Identification Paracetopsis can be distinguished from all other genera in the Cetopsinae by the combination of the possession of a vomerine tooth patch with two or more rows of teeth and a medial gap between the contralateral components of the tooth patch.
Sexing Males have distal filaments on the first fin rays of the dorsal and anal fins and in the convex margin of the anal fin.
