| Etymology | From the Greek para and amphi meaning in both sides. Named for ichthyologist Dr. Guy Teugels in recognition for his contributions to the knowledge of west African freshwater fishes. |

| Identification | The fishes of the genus have elongate cylindrical bodies, short deep heads and short rounded fins. Small eyes far forward, mouth broadwith fleshy lips.Long and slender barbels and caudal fin can be truncate or rounded. Uniform dark brown dorsally, head and abdomen pale brown ventrally. Fin rays dark brown, the fin membranes clear. Has a proportionally deeper body, longer head and larger fins than other species of the genus. |
